When Bushies attack… when I read a LTE this morning, it really didn’t strike me as that strange. Marker on a bumper sticker. Cute trick, but not symbolic of anything larger, just a pissed off Republican in Thurston County.

Its all in perspective now, though, as a few minutes later I saw this pic from the Portland Tribune (thanks Orcinus).

.

There is a part of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance that I always think back to when I run into people that over-zealously defend a moral/political/religious point:

You will always defend most what you know to to be undefendable.

Its like being stuck in the Alamo, surrounding by all those Mexicans and Santa Anna. Any idiot can see your totally screwed, but instead of giving up, your fight harder than you would have normally. Other times you in Portland and you shove your hand into someone else’s face.

One of the best things our government ever did was create the position of U.S. poet laureate, consultant to the Library of Congress in poetry.

The naming of Nebraska’s Ted Kooser, I think, is an interesting choice. A red state poet in a presidential election year. No, I’m not that cynical, but I agree with Billy Collins that “The middle section of the country needed greater poetic representation.”

Its easy to go to New England, the west coast and even parts of the South and find poets, but naming a Cornhusker the poet laureate takes guts. Only one of Kooser’s books is available at Timberland, one of the two published by Copper Canyon press of Port Townsend.

After Years

Today, from a distance, I saw you

walking away, and without a sound

the glittering face of a glacier

slid into the sea. An ancient oak

fell in the Cumberlands, holding only

a handful of leaves, and an old woman

scattering corn to her chickens looked up

for an instant. At the other side

of the galaxy, a star thirty-five times

the size of our own sun exploded

and vanished, leaving a small green spot

on the astronomer’s retina

as he stood on the great open dome

of my heart with no one to tell.

Come on guys, give it up. Even Las Vegas has a better chance than you right now.

there is now an overwhelming probability that they will wind up in either Washington or Northern Virginia — although there is still a small chance that baseball could opt to move the franchise to Las Vegas.

…Relocation candidates such as Portland, Ore., and Norfolk, Va., were pictured as being extremely unlikely.

The best thing about Pat Ryan not running was that Mike Ditka coulda been running. Now that Ditka isn’t… All the good Ditka jokes that will not be.

Ditka vs. John Kerry. Ditka will do to Kerry what da Bears did to the New Englad Patriots during the 1985 Super Bowl. Ditka 46, Kerry 10.

Ditka vs. Saddam Hussein. Ditka will have problems here. Its a road game, played under hot Iraq sun. Ditka 102, Saddam 3. Apparently he has a good kicker.

Three Dems vote to continue debate, FIVE Republicans voted against. Four of the five hail from jolly ol’New England. John McCain being the only not.

A National Party No More?

It looks as if the Grand Ol’Party is forgetting its New England roots. Oh yeah, and the best example of this phenomenon, Jim Jeffords (from R to I fame) voted no as well.

Portland Expos dead, all but… Mariners Empire safe

Hopefully on July 13, or soon thereafter, we can put this entire sordid tale behind us. The idea of ever having a major league baseball team in Portland was a poor one to begin with. Now, finally, it may be over.

…three people with knowledge of the relocation process told USA TODAY on Tuesday that those locations are ahead of Las Vegas; Norfolk, Va.; Monterrey, Mexico; and Portland, Ore., but that the committee is having difficulty reaching a final choice.

This will be the last time I run down the list. Hopefully.

1. The Mariners currently have a disproportionately large tv market. Carving off Portland and all the southern markets would harm the Ms. Rule numero uno, don’t harm the Ms.

2. Portland better than Montreal? Hardly. Even with a ravenous following, they’d be one of the smallest of small markets.

3. Why not Mexico? I did this little study, looking at the distances between Monterey, Mexico City and other Major League cities. It turns out that Mexican cities are pretty darn close.

Walk Olympia. Now, this campaign I can really get behind. I can’t wait.

Nice, my only problem with this, and it is just a little tiny problem is that both funding ideas give less money to sidewalks than to parks. Our park situation in Olympia is pretty good, our sidewalks are almost non-existant. Except in newer cul-de-sacs and developments down on my side of town, there are almost no sidewalks. This means that the higher traffic streets, such as 18th, Boulevard for the most part, Fones and 22nd, lack sidewalks.
